Community rallying saves Eagles

Updated: Mar 29, 2020

The Ararat Eagles Football Netball Club will push forward in the 2019 season after the local community rallied around the club to save it from a recession.

Players have been recruited locally, from Horsham and from as far as Melbourne in hope to keep the club alive.

At this stage, twelve players will make the journey from Horsham, five from Melbourne, with the possibility of more doing the same.

Two football coaches will be officially introduced to the club on Wednesday night at training – Curtly Maxwell as Reserves Coach and Jason Kannar as Seniors Coach.

Mick Jennings was appointed Interim Coach in March and offered to mentor anyone who was willing to coach the team during the season.

The club is still in discussion with a possible Assistant Coach but cannot announce anything at this stage.

Senior Netball Coach Melissa Murnane said that many local businesses have come forward with sponsorships since the crisis meeting.

“As a club we will have to work hard to gain sponsorships and to fundraise if we want to keep the club afloat throughout the season,” Murnane said.

The Senior Netball Coach is also looking to ask for an exemption for A Grade netball, so they can fill B and C Grade teams if no further A Grade standard netballers come forward.

“A final decision on the exemption will be made later this week, I am still trying and hoping that we can recruit some A grade netballers before then. Obviously we are aiming to field all three senior netball teams but at this stage the probability of that occuring is slim.”

Football training will be held tomorrow night at 6pm, followed by a BBQ and general meeting to meet the coach, introduce new players and inform all members of what’s happening as the club moves forward.

A netball meeting will begin at 5:45pm for all players and parents regarding registration.

The Ararat Eagles are putting the call out to local businesses in the hope of gaining sponsors. If you can assist with this, please contact President Nats McRoberts on 0428305951.
