Eagles assemble ‘new-look team’ ahead of preseason

Updated: Mar 29, 2020

The Ararat Eagles Football Netball Club is planning to fly into 2020 with a new-look team, after struggling to stay afloat during the past season. Work is underway behind the scenes following the club’s AGM on Saturday morning.

After finishing a disappointing 2019 season, the Eagles have been proactively recruiting, appointing a new senior coach and two assistant coaches as early preparations begin.

Re-elected President, Nats McRoberts said his excitement is building as past players plan to head back to the Eagle’s nest.

“Naish McRoberts, Zac Jenkins, Jack and Tom Taurau, and Ben Robinson have taken it into their own accord to come back to the club,” McRoberts said.

“They saw the state of the club this year and felt compelled to come back and get the club back on it’s feet.”

All club positions were filled at Saturday’s AGM, which saw approximately 30 people turn out. Brett Sladdin – life member and past coach – has been appointed Senior Coach, whilst Tom Taurau and Naish McRoberts will both assist.

“I’ve watched the hard work people have put into the club this season and I didn’t want it to go to waste,” Naish McRoberts said.

The new coaches have been working hard since the end of this year’s season to attract old and new players back to the club, President McRoberts said.

Brett Sladdin told AC News that around 20 senior players have so far been signed, with a “completely new-look team” assembled ahead of the preseason.

The club is now putting the call out for junior players who would want to play next season, as the club puts focus into maintaining a future.

The preseason kicks off on Wednesday, November 20 at Alexandra Oval. For more details on the club visit their Facebook Group HERE.
